SUMMARY:Media Event Announcing SW Iowa Flood/Drought Monitoring Expansion
DESCRIPTION:*Featured Image is from a Field Day at Lee Tesdell’s Farm \nPlease join the Iowa Flood Center (IFC) and Iowa Geological Survey for a media event to kickoff a new project that will expand flood and drought monitoring and forecasting capabilities in southwest Iowa. The initiative will grow the IFC’s network of hydrologic weather stations (hydrostations) and support the development of an Iowa Drought Information System to enhance decision-making and reduce risks to extreme weather events. \nThe project is funded through congressional Community Project Funding supported by Representative Zach Nunn. The media event will be held at the site of the first hydrostation being installed for the project. You\, or a representative from your organization\, are invited to attend to learn more about the project and explore opportunities for collaboration and engagement on this new initiative. \nMedia Event Details: \nDate: Friday\, August 7\, 2026\nTime: 10:00 a.m.\nLocation: Hydrostation site hosted at the farm of Lee Tesdell\, Polk County Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioner. The location is off NW Second Street north of Alleman\, Iowa. \nLocation link: LINK TO LOCATION FOR HYDROSTION MEDIA FIELD DAY \nParking will be available in the grassed field lane and alongside the gravel road. \nProgram Highlights: \nThe event will include brief remarks and a live demonstration of the hydrostation equipment and real-time data displayed on the publicly accessible Iowa Flood Information System web application. Partners invited for formal comments include: \n\nLee Tesdell\, Polk County Soil and Water Conservation District commissioner and hydrostation host;\nLarry Weber\, director of the Iowa Flood Center;\nRepresentative Zach Nunn; and\nTBA\, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service\, funding agency.\n\nAdditional Information: \nRefreshments and shade will be provided. In case of inclement weather\, updated arrangements will be communicated.
